This article emphasizes the necessity of studying historical documents and evidence to gain insights into windcatchers (badgirs) that no longer physically exist, through the introduction and analysis of four case studies from the historic city of Yazd. The aim of investigating vanished windcatchers is not necessarily their physical reconstruction, but rather to reveal and understand overlooked values and aspects of Yazd’s architectural heritage. The selected cases draw on the author’s and colleagues’ professional experiences and research over the past decade, complemented by six categories of historical sources. The study incorporates archival documents, aerial photographs, historical images, and physical evidence from buildings located within the core and buffer zones of Yazd’s UNESCO World Heritage site. The findings highlight different dimensions of the historical significance of windcatchers: in the Naji Historic House, the evolution of windcatchers from Mozafarid to Qajar-period forms can be traced; in the Panjdari Historic House located in the Khajeh Khezr quarter, documentary references to a windcatcher called Nazar (watchtower) reveal the identity and recognition of windcatchers within the neighborhood; in the Moravege Historic House, historical photographs enabled the reconstruction of the proportions and distinctive form of a tall, octagonal windcatcher now lost; and in the Arbabi (Moin al-Tojjar Historic Garden House), comparative analysis of four European travelers’ photographs from around 1900 with the existing structure led to the identification of the tallest windcatcher in the city center, whose proportions were subsequently modeled in three dimensions. This study demonstrates that integrating historical documents, visual records, and comparative analyses with current physical evidence can open new perspectives in the study of windcatchers and enrich the understanding of Yazd’s architectural history.
