Abyaneh, a village in Natanz County, is terraced on the slopes of Mount Karkas. The roof element is important due to its significant role in creating the landscape. The term ‘roof landscape’ refers to its physical and functional characteristics, which have evolved through interactions with the people's living qualities and event patterns. The functional characteristics include rest, recreation, viewing, landscape, cooperation, information dissemination, production, and similar aspects. The physical characteristics focus on the elements and details of the roof in different periods. The research problem is the decline of the roof landscape in the physical and functional evolution of Abyaneh’s houses and the inactivity of local communities in addressing this issue. Although the presence and participation of people have been influential in the consistency of the landscape from the beginning until the Qajar period, this presence has diminished in recent decades. With the introduction and use of new materials in the village, part of the physical and functional landscape of the roof has been exposed to decline.
The research aims to understand the roof landscape in Abyaneh. To achieve this, two questions are posed: What are the characteristics of the roof landscape in Abyaneh, and what has been its evolution? What factors have influenced the evolution of the roof landscape in Abyaneh? In response to these questions, using an interpretive method and a historical-interpretive approach, the functional and physical characteristics of the roof landscape in this village have been examined. The article concludes that the evolution of the roof landscape in Abyaneh can be studied in four periods: Qajar, Pahlavi I and II, the 1970s to 2000s, and the present. A combination of economic, cultural, social, human, and climatic factors has played a role in this evolution. In protecting this landscape, actions such as awareness-raising and capacity-building, along with the use of modern technology combined with indigenous knowledge of roof construction and restoration, can be beneficial. Utilizing the experiences of villages like Masuleh and providing financial incentives for roof improvement by governmental and non-governmental organizations seem necessary.
