Architectural typology of historical mosques of Kerman province based on spatial structure
Abstract
Kerman Province, with deep roots in the history and civilization of Iran, is one of the regions that has experienced different periods of governance throughout history. This area, with its abundant architectural heritage, especially mosques, holds a special position and importance. However, unfortunately, the mosques of Kerman have not received the study, recognition, and attention they deserve. In order to investigate, understand, and typologize the mosques of Kerman Province, the descriptive-analytical research method has been employed in this study. The present research focuses on examining all registered and historical mosques in Kerman Province, from the early Islamic period to the end of the Pahlavi era. In the process of examining and collecting initial information, 42 mosques were identified, but due to the destruction of some mosques or the lack of necessary documentation, ultimately 33 mosques were studied. The mosques have been examined based on their spatial elements and components, as well as their spatial enclosure. The results of this research indicate that the mosques of Kerman Province can be divided into three main types: single-spaced mosques with only enclosed spaces, mosques with both open and enclosed spaces, and mosques with open, semi-open, and enclosed spaces. Each type has given rise to different subtypes based on the type of spatial element used to create enclosure. Each subtype also includes various configurations and arrangements of spaces, which are detailed in the study.
