Daylighting performance in educational environments, where students engage in visually demanding tasks, is of critical importance. Accordingly, the present study aims to evaluate the existing daylighting and thermal performance of a school building located in Dezful, Iran, and to propose optimization strategies, including modifications to window-to-wall ratio (WWR), the application of appropriate thermal insulation in external walls and roofs, and the use of glazing systems with suitable U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). These measures are intended to ensure adequate daylight availability in classrooms while achieving Energy Efficiency Class D in accordance with Chapter 19 of the Iranian National Building Regulations. In this research, Rhinoceros 3D software and the Grasshopper platform, together with the Ladybug and Honeybee plugins, were employed for daylighting and energy-performance modeling and simulation. The results indicate that the optimum window-to-wall ratio for classrooms receiving daylight from orientations ranging between south and southwest is 40%, whereas the optimal ratio for classrooms oriented between north and northeast is 50%. Furthermore, based on the energy-consumption analyses conducted for Classroom 6 of the case-study school, which exhibited the optimal window configuration, the most favorable energy performance was achieved by employing Insulation Type 9 (rock wool insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.046 W/m·K and a density of 150 kg/m³) in the external walls, Insulation Type 4 (polymeric thermal insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.047 W/m·K and a density of 15 kg/m³) in the roof assembly, and glazing characterized by an SHGC of 0.30 and a U-value of 1.92 W/m²·K. The findings demonstrate that, through the implementation of the optimized window-to-wall ratio, appropriate thermal insulation for external walls and roofs, and glazing with suitable thermal properties, the average total annual energy consumption can be reduced to 129.07 kWh/m². Considering the building function and the climatic conditions of the study area, this level of performance satisfies the minimum requirements for Energy Efficiency Class D as specified in Chapter 19 of the Iranian National Building Regulations.
