Assessment of Urban Safety in Farahzad Neighborhood of Tehran, by Using the Factor Analysis Method

Abstract

"Safety" is one of the most important qualities of urban spaces. Although one space has many features, without this quality, there would be fewer people and this causes lack of prosperity and increases insecurity. This feature may be seen in some neighborhoods of Tehran, and Farahzad, as a context with lots of capabilities, is one of those. It is located in the far north-west region of Tehran and is well known due to the pilgrimage places, favorable weather, its watercourse and catering units. However besides its positive characteristics listed above, it has particular circumstances in terms of abandoned land distribution, vulnerable nature and undesirable constructions in the domain of watercourse, etc.These factors beside the state of residency, which is often settlers of different ethnicities, has caused Farahzad to face specific social harms. In this paper which is the result of a study, we are trying to discuss and investigate the effective factors on urban safety, from the experts` points of view, and to gain the data related to those factors Farahzad area, and after that to classify the indicators, in the form of overall related factors, by using factor analysis. In fact three factors were named by using this method; the first one(Space form and Social control) has  the highest correlation in it and it can be expressed that it is the most important factor in determining safety. This result shows that the first priority in improving security of Farahzad neighborhood is paying attention to the cited factor and after that other factors like the balance between performance, physical and social stratum and lively and legible public spaces.
