Abstract

There are many places in our lives which we can’t imagine ourselves without them. Each of these places makes some parts of “I/me” or “self”; the entity which is called “personal identity” by psychologists. In this regard, the concept of “place identity” explains physical aspects of personal identity; those aspects which are made through experiencing physical environment (places). Also based on how different psychological theories define the “self” as the basic concept, there are some theoretical challenges about the relation between place and identity. In traditional view, the “self” is a set of those personal “properties” which characterizes person from others. But in a more recent view, the “self” is a set of “meanings” which is made by person and interrelates his/her life events. The “self” in the former view is   “conceptual” and in the latter is “narrative”. This article, through psychological literature review, tries to define a conceptual framework which explains how the “place” – as a basic concept in environmental design – relates to “personal identity
